Screenshot from OMV of "Pare, Mahal Mo Raw Ako."
Have you heard this line before? Classic isn't it? Yet it hurts just as much.

Such as this song composed by Joven Tan for his entry to the 2014 Himig Handog Love Song songwriting competition, where one guy fell for his bestfriend. The song captured what was the most painful of all, being told by the person you love that they do not love you as much or worse they don't love you at all. What is more painful is when you fall for the person you are not supposed to fall for --- your bestfriend.

This song starts with the images of so-called bestfriends, both males, one of whom appears to be crying. The song revealed that during one of their drinking sessions, the cousin of the bestfriend 1 told bestfriend 2 that the other one loves him more than just as a best-friend. A confrontation happened between the two and bestfriend 1 seemed not to accept that subtle rejection.

Have you been in this kind of situation? What happened if you'll be refused by your bestfriend? Will the relationship be the same?

Pare Mahal Mo Raw Ako Lyrics
Pare mahal mo raw ako
Yan ang sabi mo raw
Nang minsan ay malasing tayo
Hindi kita sinisisi galit ay wala ako
Pare pag-usapan natin to
Pare pag-usapan natin to
Wala namang mababago
Wala namang mababago
This song is so heart-tugging and moving that you'll relate to the song if you ever have been "friendzoned". One word changes the interpretation of the song though and that's the word "Pare" (dude) as the song now pertains to both male bestfriends (unless of course if you are a guy having a girl bestfriend whom you refer as pare).

In its official lyric video, "Pare, mahal mo raw ako" has been an eyecandy for homophobes terrorizing commenters who expressed their connection to the song. This Youtube video became a battleground on homophobic remarks again.

All we can say is that, love knows no gender, no age, no status, and no boundaries. If the song was made without the word Pare and if the music video wasn't about two male bestfriends, would it change the song or how people would interpret it?

The song also reminds me of that 2007 gay-themed, romantic movie of Mario Maurer and Witwisit Hiranyawongkul where both were male bestfriends since childhood and got separated. When by chance they met again (now teenagers) Mew (Witwisit) now felt differently for his bestfriend Tong (Mario). Later in the movie their bestfriend level reached a certain mutual feeling of more than what bestfriends should be. But the events that followed complicated their budding relationship and at the end, Tong decided to not progress any further. The movie leaves you hanging and hoping to somehow have a happy ending. Trivia: this was Mario's first kiss with a guy (and it's not just a smack).

Anyway do visit the Himig Handog Love Song 2014 Site here and vote for this song! Whether you are a pare, mare or neither, this song deserves to be heard and deserves our votes too. ^_^ You can also like their Official Facebook Page

  1. I decided to listen to this yesterday and I found myself crying the moment Michael began singing. It really hit me so hard. I remember all the very close guy friends I had who I lost because of this. There are times I regret those moments and I pray that I could turn back time and stop myself. I am sad because we have to learn you know these lessons with collateral damage. It still hurts me that those guys who once were so close now they probably hate me forever. I just wish you know, if I have the chance to relive it all I would stop. But what can we do? If it's done it's done if it's not meant to be it's not. We cannot change the past. I know maybe in some way they have forgiven me and have let it pass. I guess you know if given a chance I'd apologize and tell them I'm okay. Thanks for this song although I am angry it made me cry hahahaha

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor EFFEMINATE, nor HOMOSEXUALS, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

We know that the law is good, provided that one uses it as law, with the understanding that law is meant not for a righteous person but for the lawless and unruly, the godless and sinful, the unholy and profane, those who kill their fathers or mothers, murderers, the unchaste, PRACTICING HOMOSEXUALS, kidnapers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is opposed to sound teaching.

For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.
And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,

  6. The song did not glorify homosexual relationships, did it? What's all these Bible verses all about?

    1. You think it's not glorifying homosexuality. Ok fine. But does it discourage homosexuality? No. Does it discourage homosexual act. No. Ok. So what's with these Bible verses? a reminder that homosexual relations are sinful. Is there something wrong in reminding that?

  7. YO ANONYMOUS BITCH SHOW YOUR FACE IF YOU REALLY THINK YOU UPHOLD THE REAL MESSAGE OF GOD. It's Christians like you who give ALL OF US A BAD NAME. Oh sige you have words, I have one for you. JOHN 8:7. Come back to me and bring a stone if you are worthy, okay.

I am a Christian, and I used to be EXACTLY LIKE YOU. Hanggang na-realize ko it's that mindset that drove me away. You people are driving away the people you should actually be inviting with your righteousness. In fact, YOU ARE EXACTLY BECOMING THE PHARISEES JESUS HATED 2,000 YEARS AGO.

Yo, so you think you are righteous with all your prejudice and that? Diba Jesus said na nga na with his death, the LAW IS NULL? Ay anyhow, you said it na nga sa taas... the law is for "whatever else is opposed to sound teaching". I think yooooouuuuu qualify for that.

    1. //YO ANONYMOUS BITCH// Your speech shows the opposite of being a Christian. Even though you claim to be one.

//SHOW YOUR FACE IF YOU REALLY THINK YOU UPHOLD THE REAL MESSAGE OF GOD//
My face is not important. What's important is God's words I am sharing here. You question the "real message of God"? You don't accept these verses as real messages of God?

//It's Christians like you who give ALL OF US A BAD NAME.//

How? By quoting the words of God? If you think you got a "BAD NAME" for being a homosexual, you have brought it upon yourself. If you are doing what God DOES NOT want you to do, it is YOU who brought this "bad name" on yourself! Don't blame others please. Most of all not the words of God. And please don't say "ALL OF US.." because NOT ALL homosexuals are like you. There are homosexuals who fight against the evil of their own homosexuality. They live and try their best to live a decent, chaste lives, placing God ABOVE their own selfish desires. And I say these guys are admirable and courageous.

    2. //JOHN 8:7 Come back to me and bring a stone if you are worthy, okay//

You think you are being condemned Franz because I posted Bible verses? Those are the words of God! You must have developed a very DEFENSIVE attitude in a very HOSTILE manner. This condition is usually brought about by guilt. Maybe that is the case, maybe not. I don’t know. It is a matter between you and God.

Anyway, I am back with the same verse, but not with stone. Only the word of God. You sited John 8:7 but you did not finish the whole verse. This is the whole verse.

“He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on SIN NO MORE.”

Notice the last part? God did not say “Go, and you can continue to sin.”

No. God said, “Go. From now on SIN NO MORE.” So thank you for quoting that verse. It is what you and I should always remember. To ask God’s forgiveness for our sins, and TURN AWAY from them. SIN NO MORE.

But we all are imperfect Franz. We continue to fall short. But what’s important is that WE RECOGNIZE that WE ARE SINNERS. That we are HUMBLE enough in front of God to acknowledge that we are sinners and without Him we are nothing. And then repent and accept God’s forgiveness, and AMEND our lives the best we could.

      //I am a Christian,//
If you are truly a Christian, you would acknowledge the truthfulness and holiness of the words of God that I posted above.

// and I used to be EXACTLY LIKE YOU. Hanggang na-realize ko it's that mindset that drove me away. You people are driving away the people you should actually be inviting with your righteousness. In fact, YOU ARE EXACTLY BECOMING THE PHARISEES JESUS HATED 2,000 YEARS AGO.//

These words only show that YOU are the one who is judgemental of me. Did I judge you personally? I only quoted God’s words. It’s not me you are upset about Franz, it is God’s words that makes you upset. And that is the reason why you “drove away”. You don’t want your sins or actions to be “criticized”. Most people. And it so happens that you and I cannot escape from God’s criticism of our sins. But in my case, it did not drove me away. It made me closer to God. Acknowledging my sins and accepting God’s forgiveness, and striving to be the child he wants me to be. You think I am being righteous. Sorry if you feel that way. If being righteous to you means speaking the truth, then that is your issue not mine. If you are offended of my being righteous then I’m sorry again if you feel that way. Righteous is someone who is good, or moral. I’m trying to be. All of us must try to be. But I’m not perfect. But you see that is a matter between me and God. The same goes with you and the rest of us.

The argument here is not about me. It’s about the word of God. And that’s what’s important. You shouldn’t be offended by it.

    3. BLAH BLAH BLAH you know what you did not have to watch this, so why in hell did you have to waste your time doing this? You are so pathetic you make me wanna puke. Thing is YOU DID NOT HAVE TO COME HERE AND COMMENT AND ATTACK PEOPLE YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW. Whatever. I can't compete with your understanding. It's your belief it's yours.

    4. Very typical. Not responding PROPERLY to each argument laid out (possibly due to lack of further reason ), but instead, hurl lies perhaps in desperation. It is very clear, from the beginning up to the end of this thread, who attacked who. Using words "pathetic" and "puke" to refer to another are give-away signs of a person who can no longer hold his case; if indeed there was. (besides, you don't puke at something pathetic :D you're just putting together words which you think would make a profound message and effect, but they don't, because they don't make sense at all. :D just a tip )

Anyway, with the way you responded, you practically took your "case" to rest. So thank you for doing that, you have just validated my case.

I have only shared the Scriptures (not my belief or opinion. But God's) to everyone reading this. There you have it. Either we take it or leave it, we will be held accountable before God.
again: These are WORDS OF GOD you're dealing with, not mine. May God bless you.
